Lviv Sculpture Week 2023
Organizers: Lviv city council, Lviv Regional Council, Ya Gallery, Lviv National Academy of Arts
Topic of the main project: Old and New/New and Old
Curator Pavlo Gudimov
Lviv Sculpture Week is taking place for the second time.
Last year's exhibition was mounted under rocket fire, and took place during the blackout period. But this did not prevent an unforgettable time for artists and the art-hungry mass audience. Even then, it was decided to continue the initiative and try to achieve consistent regularity in wartime conditions.
This year, by involving a larger number of artists, museums, collectors, partners, audiences, we have the opportunity to reveal the theme of the interaction of the new and the old in the space of the main project, on the streets and in the parks of the city. In dialogue, juxtaposition or contradiction, with the help of the universal language of sculpture and other types of spatial art, we talk about time, about the city, about myths, canons, form and meaning, peace and war.
The time of great changes allows us to be active and constantly discover new things in ourselves or find the forgotten old ones. Right now it is important to preserve the spirit, culture, strength and talent that are the means and goal of our great victory. The foundation for our development and self-knowledge.
And what program and locations will there be this year between September 20 and October 11?
The main project "New and Old" collects masterpieces of sculpture from different times for a sharp dialogue in the space of the Palace of Arts;
"Sculpture Route" in Stryiskyi Park hosts a collection of granite sculptures from Kanev from the ChervoneChorne Art Group - where Ukrainian and foreign artists are represented;
Ya Gallery shows personal exhibitions of classics Mykola Malyshko and Ulyana Yarosevych
The new "Shevchenko Street Gallery" opens, where the most modern sculptures of our artists will be displayed on the newly renovated site
Lviv Skansen will participate with an installation by Vlodko Kaufman
The National Museum is planning an exhibition by Ivan Samotos
Lviv Academy of Arts will hold a competition of creative student sculpture and a one-day conference, where we will try to look critically at the past and present of sculpture in public space
Also, Lviv and Kyiv railway stations, supporting the initiative, will demonstrate the authors of the week of sculpture in their spaces
Gradually, both city and museum-gallery spaces are filled with spatial art, which used to rarely appear there!
